Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is auditory processing? Auditory processing is the ability of the brain to interpret what we hear. When we hear sound, the activity within the brain’s hearing system increases and undergoes extensive processing before understanding of speech sound occurs. The stronger processing is, the better you understand what you hear.
How does faster auditory processing help us hear? Faster processing produces clearer information. By speeding it up, it helps you preserve and firm up your hearing capacities. It helps make your hearing skills grow as the brain forms new associations.
Is brain plasticity a proven scientific concept? Yes. Numerous scientific studies have been published about it.
How long is the Auditory Aerobics® program?
The beginner’s program consists of six exercises, provided on an individual basis, by an audiologist. You exercise just one hour, once a week.
How do you measure results?
We measure auditory processing skills before and immediately after the exercise program. We can tell you right then how much improvement you’ve gained.
What does it cost? The cost is just $75.00 per exercise.
Hearing Aids
How is Auditory Aerobics® different from hearing aids? Hearing aids make sound louder. Auditory Aerobics® builds speech understanding ability. Both methods offer important and useful benefits. The audiologist will help you determine the best way to maximize your hearing outcome.
Do Auditory Aerobics® help hearing aid wearers?
Absolutely! The workout helps them understand amplified speech better.
Don’t hearing aids improve slow processing? Unfortunately, no. As advanced as hearing aids have become, they are excellent for amplifying sound but do not improve slow processing. All sound, amplified or not, has to be PROCESSED and interpreted before you can understand what is heard accurately. You need good processing skills to hear clearly.
Auditory Aerobics? Hearing aids? What’s best for me? That depends on your hearing. Our audiologist can help you determine what’s best for you. A rule of thumb: to hear more clearly, turn to Auditory Aerobics; to hear soft sound, use hearing aids.
Are individuals hearing better without hearing aids?
Definitely. Persons, with minor hearing loss, are often told by professionals that hearing aids will not help them. The hearing loss has not advanced enough to require them. They are told to “go home and live with it.” It is these individuals who hear more clearly without hearing aids. Strong, capable processing skills can often compensate for minor loss of sensitivity, allowing them to hear better without wearing any hearing devices.
Hear Clearer
How do I get started? Start with the beginner’s program. It will let you know what gain in hearing you can expect. It will also determine if YOU may be able to postpone hearing aids at this time. An audiologist will then make recommendations as to how to maximize your hearing potential. Any further exercise can be completed at our office or at home on your computer (a new web site to provide home exercises through your computer is currently under construction and will be available soon).
Where can I get Auditory Aerobics®? At the present time, Auditory Aerobics® is available in Central Virginia (Charlottesville, Staunton, and Harrisonburg, Va). Steps to open more sites are being planned for the near future.
